Hadley wasnât exactly sure what had changed, only she knew something had. Was it the conversation on the way home last night? She had been tipsy, for sure, but she still remembered everything sheâd said.
And everything theyâd done.
Most especially, though, their discussion about assumptions had lingered with her, an odd counterpoint to the overheated needs of her body. All that desire was amplified by the fact that she could also talk to Zack about her thoughts and her reactions to things and her hopes and dreams.
In the cold light of day it seemed a bit trivial to get so worked up over that dumb marketing guy she and Bea had spoken about, with his charts and some presentation he kept calling a âdeck.â
Only last night, in the moment, it hadnât been trivial at all. Nor had it been misplaced pride to share all the reasons why she loved doing The Cowgirl Gourmet. Even the fierce anger that some of the show staff would question Zackâs attitude and what it might imply about his masculinity felt right. Real. And still a surprisingly large irritation, even in the cold light of day.
But what had dominated her thoughts, as she tossed and turned all evening, was the discussion about the cookbook. What it implied about all the things they no longer shared.
In all those hours of tossing and turning, she had only seen last nightâs discussion as something hopeless. One more sign of all theyâd lost. But this morning, with the open, laughing greeting in his eyes and his warm breath escaping through smiling lips in cold puffs of air, she got a different sense.
A sense of . . . renewal? If that was possible.
The urge to dissect it was strong, but the deeper urge to revel in it was even stronger.
Seeing that light in those dark brown depths made her happy. And maybe it was time to just reach out and take the happy.
Theyâd had precious little of it of late.
âI think we have a free afternoon today, after we land. Nothing until tonightâs dinner.â
âAnything you want to do?â He took his eyes briefly from the road, before turning back to the highway.
âNothing offhand, but then I thought it might be nice to do a little bit of shopping. I havenât even started Christmas yet.â
The few items sheâd ordered online did not constitute Christmas shopping, no matter how busy life was. But that also presumed there was going to be much of a holiday to shop for. She and Zack had been faking it in front of their families for a while now, but were they even going to have a standard Christmas with Charlie and Carlene fighting?
It would be silly to think that things would just magically resolve themselves. Which sort of burst her own bubble of happiness when she considered her and Zack.
Was it equally silly to think a few days away would make a difference?
âThatâs a good idea.â Zackâs ready agreement bolstered Hadleyâs spirits a bit and she tried to brush off the suddenly dour thoughts.
